Erklärung deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller und Schriftstellerinnen zu den neuerlichen Drohungen gegen Salman Rushdie

Das ist so seit 1989, und das bleibt so: Wenn Salman Rushdie gedroht wird, wird jedem Schriftsteller gedroht. Wenn Rushdie mundtot gemacht werden soll, geht das jeden Schriftsteller an, der die Menschenrechte und die Literatur verteidigt, und für den die Freiheit der Kunst ein nicht verhandelbares Gut ist. Wir müssen nicht gut finden, was ein anderer sagt, schreibt, denkt – aber um unserer eigenen Freiheit willen müssen wir es ertragen. Und gerade als Schriftsteller müssen wir denen zur Seite stehen, denen das Wort verboten werden soll, gleich welcher Literatur, welcher Kultur sie angehören.
