Bernard-Henri Lévy: God Bless Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Because she dared to speak out without taking the precautions imposed by the “culture of excuses”; to explain her rejection of this new version of fascism that we call radical Islamism. And because she had taken positions on “Islam as a doctrine” and its incompatibility with democracy, freedom, and equality: She believes that Islam must undergo a reformation if it is to become congruent with modernity. Her arguments of course provoked controversy, debate and criticism, but the fanatics interpreted them as the double blasphemy of incitement to apostasy—the supreme crime. http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=af6c666b-93c4-4280-b11b-2150b6bcab8d

Then there is the problem of Hamas’s notorious charter. We asked Khaled Mishal about it in Damascus. Written 20 years ago by one of its hardliners, Fattah Al Dukhan, who is seen in the film, the charter is a fairly unreconstructed rant about Israel and Jews in general. Yet Hamas hasn’t changed it or updated it, despite many attempts by the more PR-aware senior Hamas members to do so. So it remains a basis upon which to dismiss them as uncompromising extremists — a reason to exclude them from any talks.
The charter is not quoted or even mentioned by the leadership these days and doesn’t appear to chime with their present policies. But Mishal was adamant that the charter was none of our business; it was an internal matter for Hamas alone to consider. As we pressed him, I laughed and said, ‘You’re just being stubborn, aren’t...

Egypt threatens to break the legs of Gaza infiltrators
Egypt said on Thursday it would no longer tolerate Palestinians infiltrating the country from the Gaza Strip, and threatened to break the legs of anyone crossing the Rafah border illegally. The minister said some rockets misfire and hit the Gaza Strip itself, wounding Palestinians and merely providing Israel with a pretext to attack.
