In a sense, Garaudy, a tragic-comic figure, is typical of a certain breed of Western intellectuals who play with ideas and concepts just as play golf or poker on a weekend. Garaudy could be Communist one day, Christian another, Tcherniaist on a third say, and Muslim on a fourth, without his real life being affected in any important way. Stalinism may murder tens of millions of people while Garaudy was praising Stalin. Tchernia may be costing the Persian prince a bob or two, without Garaudy losing his admiration for that “divine shape.” Religion could foment revolution, civil war and massacre, without any of that disturbing Garaudy’s sleep in his posh Parisian apartment.

In the end, this approach also compromises the safety of German citizens. On July 31, 2006, two Lebanese students, Yussuf Mohammed El Hajdib and Jihad Hamad, placed bombs hidden in suitcases on two regional trains in Germany, but they failed to go off. Germany’s federal law enforcement agency concluded that a successful explosion would have resulted in a tragedy on par with the London subway attacks of July 2005. The two suspects said they wanted to take revenge for the Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.

Protesttechnisch hat Katja Ebstein (“Wunder gibt es immer wieder”) schon so ziemlich alles hinter sich: Atomkraft, DKP, SPD, Waldsterben, EU-Verfassung und den Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson. Da bleibt nicht mehr viel übrig, wenn man Gutes tun und darüber reden möchte. Entweder Kinder oder Tiere. Bei den Tieren hat Knut derzeit die Nase vorn, und auch bei den Kindern ist der Markt dicht besetzt. Madonna und Angelina Jolie haben Afrika und Asien unter sich aufgeteilt, also muss Katja Ebstein schauen, wo sie benefizmäßig etwas reißen kann. Am besten vor der Haustür, in Berlin und Brandenburg, wo “jedes fünfte Kind in Armut” lebt. So steht es auf 2.ooo Plakaten,   die derzeit in der Hauptstadt aushängen:“Ene mene muh und arm bist du”.
Nun hat schon Fritz Reuter gewußt: “Die Armut, die kommt von der Powerteh”,  und deswegen...

Where are the anti-Islamists’ demonstrations against terror, their combating of Islamists, their reassessments of Islamic law? I am asked.
Moderate Muslims do exist, I reply. Admittedly, they do not constitute a movement but represent mere wisps in the face of the Islamist onslaught. This means, I argue, that the US government and other powerful institutions should give priority to locating, meeting with, funding, forwarding, empowering and celebrating those brave Muslims who, at personal risk, stand up and confront the totalitarians.

There are obviously now many attractions that draw Muslims to Europe, including the opportunities for employment and welfare offered, particularly in view of the growing economic impoverishment of much of the Muslim world. They also have freedom of expression and education, which they lack at home. This is, by the way, a great incentive to the terrorists who migrate.
