Why Israel Can’t Make Peace With Hamas
I asked him the question I always ask of Hamas leaders: Could you agree to anything more than a tactical cease-fire with Israel? I felt slightly ridiculous asking: A man who believes that God every now and again transforms Jews into pigs and apes might not be the most obvious candidate for peace talks at Camp David. Mr. Rayyan answered the question as I thought he would, saying that a long-term cease-fire would be unnecessary, because it will not take long for the forces of Islam to eradicate Israel. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/14/opinion/14goldberg-1.html?_r=1&ref=opinion
Israel doesn’t want to win
Is there no effective way to defeat Hamas? Of course there is. For example, for every Qassam fired from Gaza, we can bomb Hamas’ headquarters in Damascus. For example, for every Qassam fired at Israel, we can assassinate a senior Hamas figure, either belonging to the military or “political” wing. Israel won the second Intifada not by bombing Palestinian towns and neighborhoods and refugee camps, but rather, by methodically and gradually assassinating terror leaders. Back then, we wanted to win. This time around, we don’t want to win. The official Israel does not wish to eliminate Hamas’ regime in Gaza - despite the fact that the entire world, including the Arab world, granted us permission to do it. It even deplored us to do it, as long as we avoid major Palestinian bloodshed. However, we are disappointing them: We caused great bloodshed, yet we do not intend to win. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/1,7340,L-3655327,00.html
Egypt: Gaza’s Second Front
Immediately after Operation Cast Lead began, an internationally published columnist wrote a series of articles entitled, “Hamas, Damascus, Iran - The New Axis of Evil,” which stated the sovereign government of the Gaza Strip has “elements similar to Nazism.” The author described Hamas as “lunatics who have butchered their own people,” stating its leadership is “trying to bring destruction upon its people,” whom it is “holding hostage.”
Who penned such words? Was it William Kristol? Walid Phares? Alan Dershowitz?
No, it was Muhammad Ali Ibrahim, an Egyptian MP and editorialist for the state-controlled newspaper Al-Gumhouriyya, and his anthology reveals one of the most overlooked elements of the Israeli-Hamas conflict to date: the enlightened self-interest of many Arab nations, especially Egypt, is leading them to quietly align their foreign policy toward pursuing Israeli objectives. http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID=06E96B26-B9FC-4852-B2DE-F564743DC71E

Israel’s Goals in Gaza?
I have only one question about Israel’s military operation in Gaza: What is the goal? Is it the education of Hamas or the eradication of Hamas? I hope that it’s the education of Hamas. Let me explain why. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/14/opinion/14friedman.html?emc=eta1
